Established in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At first, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to register john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domains remained running.
